GWO Basic Safety Training - Onshore

The Global Wind Organization (GWO) Basic Safety Training (BST) provides personnel with the basic skills to work safely in the Wind Industry and meet Emergency Response Training requirements for manpower new to the Global Wind Industry. It accommodates personnel working both onshore and offshore.

Course Content:
The GWO Basic Safety Training Onshore enables delegates to support and care for themselves and others working in the industry through possessing the knowledge and skills of the following modules:

Upon completion of the GWO, BST delegates will possess an awareness of the hazards encountered when working within the Wind Industry and how to control and mitigate these hazards. The BST will also equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to appropriately respond in the event of an emergency and to increase their safety through proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Emergency Equipment, and procedures. GWO BST is for people who will work in the Wind Industry or related fields and will have their duties in a Wind Turbine Environment, usually in physical contact with a Wind Turbine or an offshore Wind Structure.

Course Content: The content of the BST First Aid Module is:

  • Legislation/Risks/Hazards.
  • Management of an incident.
  • Lifesaving First Aid.
  • Ordinary First Aid.
  • Scenario-based training.

Admission Requirements: All workforce participating in BST shall be medically fit and capable of fully participating. Furthermore, delegates shall have created a personal delegate profile in WINDA and provide their own WINDA ID before completing the BST.

Course Objectives: This BST Module aims to administer safe and effective First Aid in the Wind Turbine Industry/ WTG environment by GWO First Aid Training through theoretical and practical training. The BST First Aid Module shall ensure that the delegates can demonstrate the:

  • Understanding of the importance of carrying out First Aid safely and soundly, following the legislative requirements of their geographic location and according to European Resuscitation Council (ERC) and American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines.
  • Correct use of lifesaving First Aid using the Primary Survey A – B – C.
  • Correct use of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).
  • Understanding and correct order of management in an emergency in a Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) environment.
  • Correct use of Ordinary First Aid, the Secondary Survey.
  • Identification and explanation of the normal function, signs, and symptoms of major and minor injuries and illnesses related to the human body.
  • Correct use of First Aid equipment in a First Aid scenario.

The GWO BST provides essential skills to personnel to help them work safely in the Wind Industry while meeting Emergency Response Training requirements for a workforce new to the Global Wind Industry. This training covers personnel working both onshore and offshore.

Course Content: After completion of the course, the delegate will have achieved skills and basic knowledge about:

  • The importance of carrying out Manual Handling work duties safely and soundly following the legislative requirements of their geographic location.
  • Identification of the aspects of their job tasks that could increase a worker’s risk of developing muscular/skeletal injuries.
  • Demonstration of understanding of safe practices of Manual Handling, including the correct handling of equipment.
  • Identification of signs and symptoms of injuries related to poor Manual Handling techniques and know reporting methods.
  • Demonstration of a problem-solving approach to Manual Handling in a Wind Turbine Environment.
  • Demonstration of Manual Handling risk reduction techniques.

Admission Requirements:

  • The delegate must be physically and medically fit to participate in GWO Training.
  • Maximum weight: 120 kg.

There are no additional formal admission requirements though the course is for:

  • Wind Turbine Owners and Operators.
  • Wind Turbine Manufacturers.
  • Installation & Maintenance Contractors.
  • Individuals looking to enter the Wind Sector.

Course Objectives: The aim is to give the participants awareness through theoretical and practical training to encourage positive Manual Handling behavior. Safely perform Manual Handling activities in the Wind Turbine Industry per GWO BST Manual Handling Standards.

The GWO BST offers people the fundamental skills to work carefully in the Wind Industry and to meet Emergency Response Training requirements for people just starting in the Global Wind Industry. It serves people working both onshore and offshore.

Course Content: After completion of the course, the delegate will have achieved skills and basic knowledge about:

  • Fire development and spread.
  • Causes of fires in Wind Turbines and dangers related to this.
  • Identifying any signs of fire in a Wind Turbine.
  • Contingency plans in a Wind Turbine Environment, including smoke detection and emergency escape procedures.
  • Correct actions, operation, and fire extinguishing, utilizing firefighting equipment in a Wind Turbine Generator.

Admission Requirements:

  • The delegate must be physically and medically fit to participate in GWO BST.

Course Objectives: To gain the required level of understanding and awareness of emergency response through:

  • Theoretical and practical training to prevent fires.
  • Make initial and appropriate judgments when evaluating a fire.
  • To efficiently extinguish an initial fire by using fundamental handheld firefighting equipment.

The GWO BST specifically caters to people interested in basic skills needed to work safely in the Wind Industry and meeting emergency response training requirements for people getting accustomed to the Global Wind Industry. It caters to people working both onshore and offshore.

Course Content: After completion of the course, the trainee will have achieved skills and basic knowledge about:

  • The hazards and risks associated with working at height, specific to Wind Turbine Generators.
  • Have an understanding of current national legislation regarding working at heights.
  • PPE identification, including identification of European/Global Standard Markings, e.g., harness, helmet, lanyards, etc.
  • PPE inspection, service, store, and don the relevant PFPE, e.g., harness, lanyards, vertical fall arresters, and work positioning equipment.
  • Using relevant PFPE, e.g., harness, lanyards, vertical fall arrest system, and work positioning equipment.
  • The correct identification of anchor points and correct ladder conduct.
  • Safe evacuation and use of evacuation devices.
